Using VNC to work from home
In some cases it might be easier to use VNC instead of using an X-server.
To use VNC from home you need three things:
- An SSH-client (PuTTY)
- A VNC-viewer (Free version of RealVNC) (Only the viewer needs to be installed)
- You need to be using Upunet-S if you are trying to connect from outside the university.
Using the SSH-client you connect to zeppo.it.uu.se and enter the command vncserver.
(Note: vncserver can NOT be run on SunRay-servers.)
If it is the first time you run the command, you will be prompted to choose a password.
This password will be used later to connect to the VNC-server.
When the command vncserver is executed, a VNC-session will be created. It has the form zeppo.it.uu.se:XX where XX is the "port".
Now start your VNC-viewer and connect to zeppo.it.uu.se:XX where XX is the "port" you were assigned earlier. When prompted for a password, input the password you chose when you executed vncserver the first time.
When you are done with your VNC-session, it is a good idea to kill the server process from the SSH-window.
This is done with the command vncserver -kill :XX (Where XX is the number of your session, the "port".)
Other machines that can run vncserver
- triangeln.it.uu.se
- ringbrynjan.it.uu.se
- hamberg.it.uu.se
- pilspetsen.it.uu.se
