Albireo

Albireo is a parallel computer at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala university. Employing its unique architecture, the system is today used mostly for research on parallel algorithms and parallel computer architecture.

During summer 1999, agreements were signed between Sun Microsystems and the department. These included:

• The computer system Albireo, installed in September 1999.
• As a second phase, an upgrade to a significantly more powerful parallel computer system. The upgrade was performed in December 2001, when Ngorongoro was installed.
• Collaborative research on algorithm development and computer systems research.
