The Star Albireo

Albireo is the name of the main parallel computer at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University. The name Albireo is taken from a double star (Beta Cygnii, Right ascention 19h 30.7m, Declination 27deg 58m, Separation 34.4 seconds of arc, Magnitudes 3.1 and 5.1). Albireo is known to be one of the most beautiful double stars in the sky, consisting of the main golden yellow and a smaller saphire-colored star.

The star Albireo got its name by mistake. In a translation of a 16th century publishing of the book Almagest, written by Ptolemy, one can read about "ab ireo". What "ab ireo" really means is still a mystery.
