The purpose of the assignment is:
- To learn how to find information in professional scientific magazines and journals
- To be able to summarize, evaluate and present material from the literature
- To write a paper in a team and to give constructive critique on papers written by others.
Writing a paper
You write a paper about a topic selected from the suggested topics. The paper should be based on scientific articles that you yourself select and evaluate. The suggested topics are either more in-depth course topics, or topics which we did not cover in the course. Pick a topic that looks fun. You may also suggest your own topic but it has to been approved by the instructors. You will work in teams of 2-4 students.
Your role as an opponent
You should also make an oral opposition on a paper written by another team. This means that you have to study the background area for the paper and give constructive comments on the paper when it is presented. The purpose of an opposition is stimulate a discussion about the choice of material and the conclusions. The idea is to give constructive critique to improve the paper. As opponents, you are not expected to grade the paper, or to correct formulations or the language.
In summary, you will study two topics: one as writers and one as opponents. In the process of writing, presenting and opposing a term paper, you will work with the papers in the same way as "real" scientific papers are written, presented and judged by others. The allocated time should be four weeks of full-time work for each student. There is allocated time in the schedule for the assignment. You need split the work yourself between the team members, but you are not allowed to split such that some students do the writing and others do the opposition. All team members must participate in all phases of this assignment.
The deadlines for turning in the term papers will be strictly followed. Late submission of term papers will be silently ignored and will not be graded. Also, you cannot do a presentation at a time other than the allocated slot. Participation in the presentation is mandatory for all authors.
Choice of topic - March 25
You may select up to three topics in order of preference from the list of suggested topics (you can also include a topic of your own interest) and submit it to the instructors for approval. Check if there are other students who are also interested in the area. If there are two teams who are interested in the same topic, we will suggest different groups to study different aspects of the topic or suggest an alternative topic.
Guidance - prel March 29, 13-14 and/or March 30, 15-16
You will be assigned an instructor or graduate student who will advise you to organize the paper and to help you how to find relevant articles. The advise times will be scheduled and you can sign up for different times. These times and location will be announced on the course webpage. Please, search for references and think about the objective of the paper before the guidance in order to make the meeting effective.
Outline - prel April 12
An email with a preliminary outline (Table of Content) with intended references should be mailed to the main instructor and/or your advisor. This should not be longer than a page.
Guidance - prel April 26 and 27, 11-13:00
Deadline for turning in the paper is May 12, 16:00
This is a strict deadline. You should submit your term paper to your advisor's mailbox, preferable as pdf-files (paper copies should then be scanned into pdf-files). Enclose copies of your articles that you based the paper on in order to save time for your opponents. Your advisor will check the quality of your term paper once you submit it. If a paper is not good enough, we will contact the authors and they will get a chance to revise it before distributing it to the opponent group.
Deadline for revised papers is May 24, 16;00
Revised papers ( two copies ) must be turned in no later than 16:00 on May 24 by submitting it to the advisor's mailbox. In case you have a special request for a time for your presentation or opposition you must also send an email about your request to your advisor no later than the same day.
Distribution of papers to opponents
The papers will be distributed as soon as possible to the opponents, but no later than May 24.
Presentation and opposition June 1 and 2
The papers will be presented on June 1 and 2. Each team will get 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for the opposition. You need to organize both parts so that you say the most important during these times. Detailed presentation schedule will be announced on the course webpage.
The participation of all students writing term papers is mandatory during the paper presentations. Participation for everyone is mandatory during the project presentations. Project students are of course welcome to the paper presentations too! They will also be open for other faculty and graduate students in the department.
Each team will be graded according to:
- The paper, content, organization and conclusions
- Presentation of the paper
- Opposition of another team's paper
Different weight will be given to these grading factors and the final grade for the assignment will be U, 3, 4 or 5.
