Computer Networks III (alias: Datakommunikation III, Wireless Communication Networks and Embedded Systems - Part 2, or Computer Networks MN3) is an advanced course and builds on the introductory course Computer Networks and on the intermediate level course Computer Networks II. The theme of the course is wireless and mobile communication and it is project based.
The course is given at the D-level, with 5hp study points and is open for DV-, IT-, MN, Master and Graduate students. During Spring 2013 the course will be given in English. Course code: 1DT010 (also listed as 1DT082 and 1IT132). The number of students allowed in the course is limited.

The course starts Thursday Mar 21, 13:15 in Lecture room Pol_2446. At this occasion the course outline will be presented in detail, including a presentation of projects, term papers and the seminar series.
An advanced project assignment or a term paper constitute the main part of the course. In addition, there may be seminars for the students doing projects, discussing the backgrounds to the projects. Both the projects as well as the paper topics must be chosen within wireless sensor networks or mobile communication.
There is no written exam at the end of the course. Instead, the scheduled exam days are used for project demonstrations and term paper presentations with mandatory participation.
Project or Term paper
After the introduction lecture, the students (who intend to follow the course) should file a request for either a project or a term-paper topic. See details under tabs Term Paper and Projects
Students who want to work together should indicate so by using the same request. The request must reach the course responsible teachers no later than 27 March, 12:00 by email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please, also list the second choice term paper topics or project selections.
Depending on the scope of the term-paper topic, groups of two or four students should be formed.
The sizes of the student-groups for projects should be at least three persons and normally at most 5. A project consist both of a practical and a literature study part.
Each project group will be assigned a project adviser who will be the group's contact person during the course. The adviser will help the group with computers and other equipments, literature to read and other practicalities. The term-paper adviser will help with finding appropriate literature and ensure the basic quality of the term paper. The formed groups with respectively adviser will be announced by 2 April , via email and on the course web pages.
It is expected that all groups will work independently and to a large extend plan their own work so that the papers and projects will be finished within the study period and the allocated time. The expected work effort for each group member is about four weeks of full time for both papers and projects.
The course is finished and examined with two presentation days, Monday May 27 and Tuesday May 28 , comprising presentation of the term papers and demonstrations of the projects. Each term-paper group should present their paper orally as well as do an opposition on another group's term-paper. The opposition should consist of constructive critique with the purpose of helping the other group to improve the paper. This means that the opponents need to, not only to read the term-paper, but to also study the surrounding area of the paper to be able to appreciate it's significance. Project results are in the form of a presentation and a demo. All students attending the course must participate during all project presentations . More information about projects and their organization is posted under the link Projects on the course homepage.
Course reading material
There is no course book. Some of the assumed background knowledge can be found in: Mobile Communications Second edition (2003), Jochen Schiller, Addison-Wesley, ISBN 0 321 12381 6 or Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP (2010), Jean-Philippe Vasseur, Morgan-Kaufamann.
Students will be examined and graded in terms of; presentations of and oppositions on term-papers, or project demos and presentations. The grades will be U (Not Pass), 3, 4 or 5 and it will be composed of the following parts and weights: <project - 1,0> or <term paper - 0,75, opposition - 0,25>. Individuals in the same team may get different grades depending on their performance.
Since the course uses continuous examination with active participation of several students, there is no possibility for late or partial examination after the course.
