Basic concepts and theorems in functional analysis. Variational form of
elliptic problems. The Ritz-Galerkin method. Finite element methods. Different
kinds of finite elements. Comparison with other methods. Error estimation.
Curved boundaries. Sparse matrices. Direct and iterative solutions of the
linear systems. The conjugate gradient method. An introduction to FEM for
time-dependent problems and a survey of software systems for FEM.
