We have a fully equipped usability lab that you, when becoming a student, will learn how to use. The software tested can be anything from websites and media players to more specific applications of many forms. What is being tested is determined in cooperation with our industrial partners and the results will therefore always be eagerly awaited by a development team somewhere. Amongst us we have experience from hundreds of usability tests and also the theoretical background needed to teach you how to achieve valid and reliable results.

The largest Swedish news web site, Aftonbladet.se, has had a poll open to university students in Sweden for some time. It is now closed and Uppsala was named “best town for university students”. Why not come and see for yourself?
Here’s the link (article in Swedish only).

Because most of our course modules are based on projects, each student will build up a portfolio of completed work. Since these projects deal with solutions to real needs from real clients they will become a valuable addition to the diploma when applying for a job. Also, portfolios will be managed through a web-based system allowing students to make results publicly available as the course develops.

As you probably have noticed, an important ingredient in our program is the cooperation with industry and organizations. We have tried this in earlier versions of the master program (pre-Bologna) and found a way of handling it that we think works extremely well both for the students and the companies as well as being very positive for the students ability to practically grasp the theoretical concepts conveyed in the different courses.
How does it work? In short, we let the students act as consultants would. The role of the teacher responsible for the course is to act as mentor and tutor. The students, who work together in small teams, meet with the company representative and get a problem presented to them. Typically these are problems that the company would not have had time to investigate properly otherwise but are real problems where a good solution will make a difference. The first part of the job is to understand and limit the problem to something that fits the course content and that can be successfully accomplished during the allotted time. The team then works with the problem under guidance of the teachers and in the end presents their solution to the company both in the form of a report and a presentation. We have found that it is important that the inital meetings and the final presentation take place at the relevant company site. This helps the students to better understand the problem and they also get a chance to “look behind the scenes” of a company, something many of them have not done before.
They also present their work at length to the rest of the students in the program at a seminar aimed at discussing theoretical issues as well as the concrete result.

The new program is now officially underway and this website launched. As a program coordinator it feels really great to finally see the first concrete results of all the work and the planning. I hope the large number of people who has made it all possible feel as good as I do right now. Fortunately, we have been teaching HCI for over 15 years and have had an earlier version of a master program since 1998. Without that experience this new program simply wouldn’t have been possible.
We believe we have put together a very unique program that meets many different goals at the same time: tailored to the needs of industry, theoretically sound and directly connected to the research front, using novel and inspiring teaching techniques etc.
The next exiting date is April 16 when we will learn who the students are that have applied for the program this year. We can’t wait!
I as well as the other staff members will keep posting bits and pieces regarding the program in this forum over the coming months, so please look in here from time to time.
