GENIE

Genie Educational Network Investigation Experience

Genie is a virtual lab environment used for educational purposes. It is based on KNOPPIX and MLN. The goal is to provide a flexible environment making it easy to create and maintain new labs and exercises. As of now Genie is equipped with various network analysing and simulation tools, most notably MLN with a UML kernel and a stripped Debian filesystem. Using MLN Genie can run practically any configuration of networked computers, the only limit being the amount of RAM available (minimum ~512MB including optional swap-space).

In our department Genie is used for three labs:

Routing Lab
Linux network setup and routing in the network layer.
Snoop Lab
Investigating network layers, services and HTTP transactions using Ethereal.
MANET Analysis
Vizualising and analysing mobile ad-hoc network routing protocols using ns-2.

There are also plans for creating a LAN configuration lab.
