Leveraging heterogeneous systems for efficiency and performance requires generating and optimizing code for a variety of targets with the appropriate balance between static (single- or multi-version compilation) and runtime (version selection, JIT, hardware configuration) control and configuration. This project will investigate how we can develop and use novel compiler optimizations and runtime decisions to improve efficiency on heterogeneous systems through better code generation and runtime configuration. Our targets include traditional CPU/CPU systems as well as big/little cores, and CPU-like accelerators. We expect that the successful applicant will be able to work with and extend the optimization and runtime techniques pioneered by our group as well as drive the project forwards based on his or her own background and expertise.

The positions will be in the computer architecture group (UART) , collaborating with the Uppsala Programming for Multicore Architectures Research Center (UPMARC).

Qualifications required:
Candidates should have a Doctoral Degree (PhD or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent at most three years before the application deadline (this time will be extended for medical leave, parental leave, etc.). A thesis focusing on compilers and optimization, and familiarity with computer architecture, runtime systems, and heterogeneous architectures are expected. The applicant should be highly self-motivated, able to work well in a diverse group, comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism, and have strong abilities for critical thinking and structured work. These competencies are as important as the technical qualifications.

The position is for a maximum of two years and may include teaching (in English or Swedish) depending on availability and your interests. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are an absolute requirement.

The Applicant
The successful candidates will become part of a large dynamic international research group, including 15 PhD students, 2 post doc and 4 professors from four continents with strong contacts to industry and a history of successful startups. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the UPMARC interdisciplinary 10-year multicore research program within the Dept. of IT at Uppsala University, which ranked among the top 100 universities in the world.

The applicant should be highly self-motivated, able to work well in a diverse group, comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism, and have strong abilities for critical thinking and structured work.

A Postdoc position is for a maximum of two years. Postdocs in the UART group are generally spend half to three-quarters of their time working on their specific project, including individual research, project administration, and PhD student supervision. During the remaining time they are expected to pursue new independent research directions and expand their academic credentials through pedagogical training, teaching, and external collaborations. We strive to support and mentor our Postdocs to help them develop strong academic credentials and networks for their future careers.

Working in Sweden:
Sweden is a fantastic place for living and working. Swedes are friendly and speak excellent English. The quality of life is high, with a strong emphasis on outdoor activities. The Swedish working climate emphasizes an open atmosphere, with active discussions involving both junior and senior staff. Postdocs are full employees, with standard salaries and five weeks of paid holiday. Spouses of employees are entitled to work permits. Healthcare is free after a small co-pay and the university subsidizes athletic costs, such as a gym membership. The parental benefits in Sweden are among the best in the world, including extensive parental leave (for both parents), paid time off to care for sick children, and affordable daycare.
