Abstract

The paper discusses the extent to which the process operator is able to contribute to the control and optimization of the process in a modern process plant from the point of view of modern cognitive psychology. An important conclusion is that modern information systems do not support this kind of tasks because they do not provide the kind of dynamic information needed to help the operator develop the ncessary mental models. Instead, such systems are developed mainly for supervision and fault diagnosis.
