Abstract

This paper discusses work in high technology environments as a form of dynamic decision making where the operator's task is to achieve control over some dynamic process as well as over his own work situation. The conditions for achieving control are discussed, and it is noted that modern technological systems are often not designed to help the operator develop the mental models needed to achieve control. Research on dynamic decision is reviewed, and the possibilities for improving operator control by means of modern information technology are discussed.
