Gender equality in academic recruitment processes

Academic appointment processes are built on a number of myths, for example that procedures are transparent and that criteria are gender neutral. However, a solid body of research shows that gender biases influence academic appointment, resulting in unequal outcomes.
The seminar is based on investigations into academic appointment processes in five countries. These investigations uncovered equality issues in all countries, appearing not only in connection with the evaluation of merits and the selection decision itself, but long before an appointment was advertised and even after the decision had been made. The investigations have resulted in a number of suggestions and recommendations. At the seminar we will discuss their relevance for the IT department at Uppsala University.
