Abstract:

A train simulator has been developed using Java and XML. The purpose is to use it as a tool in the process to build prototypes of future train driver interfaces. This work has been done within the LINS project at the division of human-computer interaction at Uppsala University. The LINS project aims to investigate issues about the train drivers' existing and future information environment. Prototypes of train driver interfaces is to be developed and one of the tasks is to study the impact of the train driver's situation awareness compared to the current ATC system and the upcoming ERTMS/ETCS.
