Smart City

To bring together researchers between divisions and between the department of Information Technology and external parts to create a multidisciplinary joint initiative focusing on IT for smart society.

Current research activities within the Arena

CRUNCH - Climate Resilient Urban Nexus Choices: Operationalising the Food-Water-Energy Nexus

Person interacting with digital city model
The CRUNCH project investigates food, water and energy as one complex system, leading to increased knowledge and discoveries that cannot emerge when investigated separately in ‘silos’. It will combine an integrated decision support system and visualisation models with expert knowledge in waste, food, material flows, water and energy management and urban planning, architecture and urban governance.

Data Integration and Analysis

Two people behind computer pointing at graphs
The Uppsala Information Laboratory (http://infolab.it.uu.se ) develops methods to analyse online human-generated data, such as discussions on social media. Data integration and data analysis are a fundamental component of Smart Cities. The lab also participates in a European project on ethics in the Internet of Things.

GreenIoT for Smart Cities and Open Data

Installation of an air quality sensor
The GreenIoT project aims at developing an integrated IoT solution for environmental sensing, which enables experimentation with applications and services using open data for sustainable urban development. The GreenIoT architecture has been manifested in terms of a testbed in city centre of Uppsala. The GreenIoT testbed and the open data allow third parties to test new sensing products and develop new applications.

Modelling and control of wastewater treatment plants

Wastewater treatment plant
We are developing automatic control, early warning systems, and models for wastewater treatment plants. Results from full-scale implementations of the control strategies show energy savings between 12-20 % without reducing the quality of the treated wastewater. Furthermore, by using advanced data driven fault detection methods, bias errors in sensors can be detected before they seriously affect the operation of the plant. The research is a part of a research cluster: VA-kluster Mälardalen, see www.va-malardalen.se (in Swedish). We are also a member of the national Water Research School, www.waterresearchschool.lu.se.

Optimisation

The Optimisation Group focuses on focuses on solving optimisation problems, which is about finding values for unknowns such that constraints are satisfied and, optionally, a cost is (near-)minimal or a gain is (near-)maximal.

Opportunities for optimisation abound in smart cities: smart sensor placement subject to energy constraints, decision support for urban planning, smart routing for transportation and logistics towards greener cities, and so on.
