Sustainability

Research, education, and outreach on sustainability are spread all over the divisions and research groups of the Department of Information Technology. The objectives of this entity (locally called an arena) are: to increase awareness of sustainability-related funding opportunities; to create forums to allow members of the department interested in sustainability-related topics to meet one another (matchmaking) and develop project ideas, particularly as related to funding opportunities; primarily through seminars, to facilitate better awareness and connections with sustainability research outside the department. The arena coordinator is Mike Hazas.

Closing date Call Vital statistics Summary
6 Feb 2024 Formas special call: Smart Built Environment: Digital spatial planning in practice 1-4 years, 0,5-4 million SEK can be requested from Formas. Requires 50% co-funding and a business or public sector partner (the co-funding does not have to come from them). Digitalisation as a tool for spatial planning for sustainability.
6 Mar 2024 Energimyndigheten: Solutions for a resource-efficient society using design and behavioral science (Skapa nya lösningar för ett resurseffektivt samhälle med hjälp av design och beteendevetenskap) up to 4.4 years, max 8 million SEK. This is the yearly "Design för energieffektiv vardag" call. Example challenge areas: solutions for a more resilient everyday life (e.g. reduce the vulnerability of the home, or make it easier for people to influence their energy and resource use); new thinking on reuse and reduced resource use (e.g. circular solutions or new ways of using existing tech/resources); solutions for a resource-efficient future and what a good everyday life and housing can look like (inspiration/links to the New European Bauhaus are welcome).
19 Mar 2024 Energimyndigheten: Developing and integrating fossil-free and electrified vehicles (Utveckla och integrera fossilfria och elektrifierade fordon) up to 4.6 years, with at least 25% co-funding from industry. Very tech-focused (vehicles, hardware, software). Example areas: policy development or societal development to enable faster implementation; hardware and software optimization and architectures for vehicles and charging infrastructure; unexplored technologies, such as vehicles as energy storage/flexibility resource; optimised vehicle energy efficiency in the use phase; power electronics for vehicles and infrastructure.
21 Mar 2024 Energimyndigheten: The role of electric vehicles in the energy system of the future (Bidra till utvecklingen av elfordonens roll i framtidens elsystem) up to 3.15 years, max 5 million SEK. Example challenges and research areas: ownership models, mobility trends, smart technologies and V2G affect things; roles of markets and actors; role of technical standards on the design of the system, plus links to smart building tech; interoperability and cybersecurity associated with data sharing; social aspects, equity aspects and user perspectives; business models and regulatory challenges; electricity system planning and resilience; sparsely populated, rural and urban perspectives.
27 Mar 2024 Energimyndigheten: Heating and cooling in future energy systems (Värme och kyla i framtidens energisystem) up to 4.3 years, max 10 million SEK. Four themes: Energy market, collaboration and community engagement; Resource efficiency and circular systems; Sustainable technology and system solutions; Security of supply in heating and cooling.
30 Apr 2024 (Sista april!) Formas: Consumption in line with climate goals 3-4 years, 3-6 million SEK. Start date must be 1 Dec 2024. Research on sustainable consumption, which is translatable into action. Systems perspective (broad, holistic). Collaboration with civil, private or public organisations. Example areas: policy instruments; core values and norms for consumption; power and responsibility of stakeholders; trade and consumption; how climate change affects consumption.
29 May 2024 Energimyndigheten: Collaborative research and innovation for the energy and climate transition of the transport system (Samverkansbaserad forskning och innovation för transportsystemets energi- och klimatomställning) up to 4.08 years, typically 2-7 million SEK, max 9 million. Non-academic stakeholders required. Outcomes of the project should be practical ones enabling future change of the transport system. Areas: regulation, policy and business models; just energy transition and conflicts of interest; mobility and accessibility; optimized and resource-efficient systems.
