Orientation for the Masters in Computer Science, COPA and Sino-Swedish at Uppsala University

Please note that although the information on this page should now be stable, updates may still happen.

On campus or online?

We are planning for full on campus-teaching from the start of the autumn semester, on August 30. However, the university still has some Covid-19 restrictions in place before that date so the orientation week meetings will take place by Zoom (and to a limited extent also on campus).

Time zone

All times on this web page and other web pages of the university are given in Swedish time. Right now, the time is CEST (Central European Daylight Savings Time), which is GMT+2. From Sunday, October 31, the time will be CET (Central European Time), which is GMT+1.

Finding the department

You'll spend most of your time at the department of Information Technology on the Polacksbacken campus. You'll find the location of the department on this map. You'll find a presentation of the campus here. You'll also spend time at the neighbouring Ångström laboratory campus which is presented here. Starting in 2022, the department will move to a new building at the Ångström Laboratory.

Student Account

To participate in the programme it is very important that you have a student account for university computer systems by August 30 at the latest. You can read more about getting a student account here

Prepare your individual study plan

Before the individual meeting you should have read the information about the first semester courses and thought about what interests you have and also give thought to what you want to study in the following semesters. (Note that the semesters are divided into "half-semesters" or periods. The autumn semester includes periods 1 and 2, the spring semester includes periods 3 and 4.)

You can find information about the programme as a whole in the syllabus for the programme. See particularly the links labelled Outlines. You can find a table of all the courses in the programme divided into subdisciplinces with their dependencies (i.e.what course(s) you must take to be eligible for another course) here. Note that the compulsory introduction course "Advanced Computer Science Studies in Sweden" is not in the table, nor is the final semester which is always dedicated to a degree project.

You can also take courses outside of the programme, both within the department and in other departments, subject to availability and you having the necessary prerequisites.

If you are a fee-paying student then you must choose courses for a total of exactly 30 credits each semester. (Including the 5 credits for the introduction course.)

If, upon starting a course, you find that it wasn't what you expected, you can change courses during the first week of study, but not later. (That means, at the latest September 3.)

Individual meetings

All students need to have an individual meeting with one of the persons responsible for the programme or with the programme student advisor to discuss your study plan and finalise enrollment. The meetings will be conducted by Zoom.

  • Students taking the Sino-Swedish specialisation will be contacted by Anders Berglund about their individual meetings.
  • Student with a bachelor's degree from Uppsala or having studied at a Swedish university and not yet finished their bachelor's degree should sign up for a meeting with Liselott Dominicus van den Bussche using the doodle here. She will send a Zoom link to you using the e-mail address you gave when applying for the Master's Programme. If the slots run out, then contact Liselott by e-mail and she will add more slots.
  • Other students should have their meetings with either Roland Bol or Lars-Henrik Eriksson. Students meeting with Roland Bol should use this Zoom link. Sign up using this Doodle. Students meeting with Lars-Henrik Eriksson should use this Zoom link. Sign up using this doodle.

Use your full name when signing up on Doodle and Zoom – not nicknames, given name only etc.

All students need to have a valid ID (e.g., a passport) and -- in case of Zoom meetings -- a device with a camera available at the meeting. Students with a provisional offer of enrollment, in addition, need to have uploaded the necessary documents to the university admissions site. It is mandatory to complete your course selection before orientation is over, August 27.
