Academic writing in computer science

The purpose of an academic text is to share new thoughts and ideas, observations and results, so that these may later form the basis for the work of others. In order for this to be possible, any results, observations, ideas, etc., must be presented clearly enough so that future readers can understand and evaluate them. Some features of an academic text are as follows:

  • Stylistic principles - the text must obey general academic principles of style, as well as any discipline-specific ones. Computer science has many subdisciplines with different styles and norms.
  • Analytic competence - the author must question old and new results and try new, innovative solutions to any problems.
  • Scientific transparency - the text describes the author's investigations, for example, earlier research that is relevant, details of methods used, what types of experiments have been conducted.
  • Objectivity - descriptions must be objective and on point; personal opinions are not relevant.
  • Linguistic clarity - the author uses language to clearly convey information to the reader, making it easy to understand.
  • Correct language - no grammatical or spelling errors.
